Bridge House
North Yorkshire, Paragraph 55
-
Set within the historic pleasure gardens of a country house, this exceptional new home is a landmark in rural architecture, designed under Paragraph 55 of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). Created by Kevin Brown Architect in collaboration with Luca Biselli, the design is inspired by the form of a fallen branch, seamlessly integrating with its surroundings. The project was carried out by Rural Solutions to ensure design principles were met while respecting the site’s natural and historic features.
-
The house is positioned within an estate once known for its pleasure gardens, which featured specimen trees and ornamental lakes. The mature trees now provide a natural canopy, enhancing the home’s relationship with its environment. The lakes reflect the trees and sky, further grounding the house within the landscape. The design is inspired by a fallen branch, with an elongated, meandering form that rests lightly on the land.
-
The house’s materials, including locally sourced timber and stone, blend seamlessly with the environment. Expanses of glazing frame views of the water, trees, and surrounding landscape. The roof features a living green expanse that embeds the structure further into the environment, enhancing biodiversity while reducing the home’s visual impact.
-
The design incorporates cutting-edge sustainability features to reduce its environmental footprint, including:
A ground-source heat pump for efficient, low-carbon heating.
Rainwater harvesting systems to minimize reliance on mains water.
High-performance insulation and glazing to optimize energy efficiency.
A micro-hydro scheme for generating power.
-
Inside, the house balances modernity with warmth through the use of natural materials. The open-plan living spaces are arranged to offer uninterrupted views of the specimen trees and lakes. Exposed timber beams and stone accents create a tactile, inviting interior, maintaining a connection between the house and its historical setting.
-
This exceptional Yorkshire home is a sensitive and poetic response to its historic setting. Combining outstanding design with environmental responsibility, it stands as a contemporary masterpiece while respecting and continuing the site’s rich heritage.
